Holly had never stepped foot in a gym prior to starting 1-1 personal training with me back in March last year.
She had done a mixture of home workouts and dieting in the past, and like most, her initial efforts would see a drop on the scale...
However, she would inevitably reach a plateau through a lack of knowing how to continue progressing, or having anyone else to be accountable to or offer alternative solutions.
This lead to a yo-yo cycle, and I remember her saying on the initial consultation that she could never maintain her goal weight.
Getting Started With Training
Holly started training with me twice per week.
The sessions were full body strength training based, to be able to assess her current capabilities, strengths and weaknesses.
Holly's main concern was technique, and if you know my coaching style, you'll know that is always at the forefront - you can't train consistently and progress if you're not confident in what you're doing, or injured.
She picked up everything I coached really quickly (and also became really frustrated when she didn't get things on the first go! 😅)
Now she is at the point where she can confidently train in any gym and know exactly what to do to be effective without injuring herself. And lb for lb, she's STRONG!
Nutrition Was 'Plug And Play'
Holly had previous experience with calorie counting and knew that worked in the past. Initially we stuck with the same targets as she got into her new routine with training.
Each session we would talk about what she was eating and tracking, and how her diet was working for her goals and lifestyle.
Over the first month or so, we kept the focus on keeping protein intake up. This would be important to not only build lean muscle, but also retain it as she lost weight.
When calories are lower, the body will not only burn body fat, but muscle too - if protein levels aren't kept at a high enough level. This helps reveal a more toned look once the weight comes off!
As the months went on, and her activity increased more, we actually increased calories and continued to lose weight. We also looked at different meal options for variety.
A New Lifestyle
Holly wanted to get into running and starting with me gave her the push to do it, off her own back!
She started the 'Couch to 5k' program, and saw it through from start to finish! Three runs per week between her PT sessions, rain or shine. Not an easy feat at all, because i'd say 90% of people that i've known start that program, have never stuck with it to the end.
Since completing that, she went straight onto another running program, and is currently running up to four times per week, in preparation for a half marathon later this year!
The Next Phase
Holly has trained hard in her sessions and put full trust in my coaching (even if at times it felt like 'death by a thousand cuts'), ground out tough runs every week on the pavements without hesitation, and not only hit her initial body composition goals - but surpassed them!!
Now the goal will be to continue building strength to supplement her running challenges, and enjoy training.

Holly is the most fanatical Swiftie I have ever met (and we have a few at SP alone!). Two hours per week for almost a year, my Spotify algorithm has conspired with her to convert me into Taylor Swift 'lover'. Having listened to each album through countless times, here is my current Top 5...
Getaway Car
Don't Blame Me
Never Grow Up
Bejewelled
...Ready For It?
I've truly enjoyed our sessions so far, and am so proud of her achievements. Holly has completely transformed her health, fitness and life in general - and i'm excited to see how far she can go from here!
